Local Tips

The marimo — perfectly spherical green algae balls found naturally only here — are one of Japan's strangest natural wonders. The Ainu Kotan village on the lakeside has the most authentic Ainu cultural performances and crafts in Hokkaido. Winter ice fishing on the frozen lake (Jan–Feb) is a unique and accessible experience.
