Why Visit

  • 1

Rairaikyo Gorge behind the onsen town is a slot canyon of smooth granite walls and clear water

  • 2

The spring water at Akiu contains sodium chloride and calcium bicarbonate — known for skin-softening

  • 3

Autumn foliage in the gorge frames the riverside ryokan in gold from late October

  • 4

Sendai Tanabata Museum is 30 min away — the annual Tanabata festival (August) is one of Japan's biggest

Local Tips

This is a true ryokan-town onsen — most facilities are for overnight guests. For day visitors, Sakan and Yumoto Saito are the most accessible. The gorge walk upstream takes about 40 minutes and is worth doing before or after bathing.
