The sacred cave where sun goddess Amaterasu hid, plunging the world into darkness — and the vast riverbed cavern where 8 million deities gathered to coax her back out. Today the cavern is lined with thousands of stone cairns stacked by visitors, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Local Tips

The cave shrine (Amanoyasukawara) is a 10-minute walk downstream along the river from the main shrine — don't skip it. Arrive early morning to experience the cave in peaceful mist. Takachiho town is 10km away and worth combining for a full day.
