Access

90 min by bus from Kumamoto Station

Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Active volcano crater with turquoise sulfuric lake

  • 2

Vast green caldera stretching over 100km

  • 3

    Horseback riding across volcanic plains

Local Tips

Check the Japan Meteorological Agency volcanic alert level before visiting — the crater closes frequently at Level 2 or above. Even when the crater is closed, the caldera rim viewpoints (Daikanbo, Kusasenri meadow) remain extraordinary. The morning sea of clouds filling the caldera is best seen October–November from Daikanbo.
