Why Visit

  • 1

Goryokaku Tower offers a bird's-eye view of the perfect five-pointed star shape from 107m

  • 2

About 1,600 cherry trees fill the star-shaped moat with pale pink each late April

  • 3

The fort housed the self-declared Ezo Republic — the only republic in Japanese history

  • 4

History museum within the fort reconstructs the 1869 battle with detailed dioramas

Local Tips

The star-shaped fort is only fully visible from the tower above — the aerial view is the reason to visit. Spring cherry blossoms within the moat are spectacular and very popular. The Hakodate Magistrate's Office inside the fort is a full reconstruction — explore the tatami rooms and courtyard freely.
