Local Tips

The Kumagawa River running past the ruins is one of Japan's top three rapids for river rafting — book a rafting tour (Apr–Oct) and combine it with the castle walk. The Aoi Aso Shrine in Hitoyoshi city is one of Japan's oldest, predating the castle by centuries. The SL Hitoyoshi steam train from Kumamoto (seasonal) is a scenic way to arrive.
