Umagase Cliffs, Hyuga Cape

Sheer 70m basalt columns plunge straight into the Pacific along the most dramatic stretch of Japan's eastern coastline. A glass-floor observation deck lets you stand over the void above crashing waves — and the horizon here is uninterrupted ocean all the way to the Americas.

Local Tips

The 70m Umagase cliffs stretch for 4km — continuous sea-stack and cave geology on the Hyuga-nada coast. The walking trail along the clifftop takes 30–40 minutes. The Pacific views are unobstructed in all directions. On clear days the Nichinan Coast stretches to the south. Combine with Aoshima Island and Sun Messe Nichinan for a full Miyazaki coast day.
