Why Visit

  • 1

The castle connects to the pine-covered Niji-no-Matsubara beach by a long promenade — walk it at low tide

  • 2

Visit the Karatsu Kunchi float museum nearby to see the elaborate autumn festival floats year-round

  • 3

Combine with lunch at the Karatsu port fish market for ultra-fresh sashimi

Local Tips

The castle sits directly on a headland above the sea — the views over Karatsu Bay and the pine island chain (Niji-no-Matsubara) from the top floor are outstanding. The approach through the pine forest is pleasant. Combine with the Karatsu Kunchi float festival displays in the castle's Hikiyama Exhibition Hall (¥310 extra).
