Location

Why Visit

  • 1

The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum on the adjacent hill has excellent bilingual exhibits

  • 2

The beach's purple-tinged sand is caused by iron minerals — unusual and photogenic

  • 3

The Katsurahama Aquarium features tosa dog demonstrations (Japan's fighting breed)

Local Tips

The beach is sacred (swimming prohibited) due to the Tosa Shrine overlooking it — but the dramatic waves and rocky coastline are beautiful regardless. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum is the main cultural draw — Ryoma, the revolutionary who modernised Japan, was born in Kochi. The tosa fighting dog (one of Japan's most powerful breeds) demonstrations nearby are a local curiosity.
