Kazurabashi Vine Bridge

A 45m suspension bridge made entirely of wild vine stems (shirakuchi kazura), rebuilt every three years. Originally built by Heike clan refugees to enable cutting if pursued — you feel the vine gaps underfoot.

Local Tips

The bridge bounces and sways — hold the wisteria vine handrails firmly. The Iya Valley vine bridges are rebuilt every three years using wild mountain vines by local craftsmen. The Nishi-no-Kazurabashi (western bridge, 30 min by car) is less visited and equally dramatic. Combine with the Biwa Waterfall and Oboke Gorge boat tour for a full valley day.
