Why Visit

  • 1

The only people permitted to carry visitors up by palanquin are a single licensed family — still operating

  • 2

Miniature reproductions of ships sent by maritime families — shrine protects sailors

  • 3

Golden amber sake sold only at the top, made from the spring near the shrine

Local Tips

The 785-stone-step climb to the main hall is the pilgrimage itself — the stone lantern-lined staircase builds anticipation well. Kago sedan chair service (¥6,800 one way) is available for those who need it. The Treasure Hall at step 365 contains Picasso and other Western artworks — an unexpected collection. The view of Sanuki Plain from the top is expansive.
