Local Tips

Hana-Mitate refers to the volcanic highlands ablaze with mijagihagi bush clover and susuki grass in September–October. The Kuju Highland hiking trails (accessible from Makizono trailhead) include ascents of multiple peaks above 1,700m. The plateau is 1,000m+ elevation — significantly cooler than Beppu in summer.
