Local Tips

Kurama is famous for Sojobo — the tengu (mountain spirit) who taught the warrior Yoshitsune swordsmanship. The mountain path from Kurama Temple over the ridge to Kibune (90 min hike) is the classic route — come down to a riverside kawadoko lunch. The Kurama Fire Festival (October 22) is one of Japan's most dramatic night festivals.
