Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Sculptor Kotaro Takamura's "Maiden of the Lake" bronze figures stand at the water's edge

  • 2

Pleasure boats cross the lake to Yasumiya, where the only road reaches the shore

  • 3

Beech forest surrounds the lake with almost no development — one of Japan's clearest large lakes

  • 4

The lake freezes only at its shallower edges in the coldest winters

Local Tips

The real attraction is the 14km Oirase Gorge walk along the outflow river from the lake — moss-covered rocks, cascades, and ancient forest at their finest in June and October. The drive from Aomori city (2 hours) passes through beautiful highland scenery. In winter the gorge freezes into spectacular ice formations visited by snowshoers.
