Local Tips
Lake Toya's perfectly circular caldera lake and the steaming Showa Shinzan volcanic dome (which rose from a wheat field in 1943) make this one of Hokkaido's most dramatic landscapes. The fireworks over the lake run every night April–October at 8:45pm — one of Japan's longest-running nightly firework shows. Noboribetsu Onsen is 30 minutes south for a full day.
