Local Tips

Minakami is Tokyo's outdoor adventure base (2.5 hours from Shinjuku) — rafting on the Tone River, bungee jumping, canyoning, and skiing all within a small valley. Book activities in advance for weekends, especially rafting in May–June when the snowmelt creates the fastest water. The Takaragawa Onsen outdoor bath (mixed, very large) at the valley head is one of Japan's most famous.
