Naoshima Island

Japan's most celebrated contemporary art island — a former industrial wasteland transformed by Tadao Ando and the Benesse Foundation into a world-class open-air museum set among rice paddies and sea breezes.

Local Tips

Book Chichu Museum entry in advance online — timed entry is required and weekends sell out. The Art House Project (8 houses in Honmura village) is the most intimate experience. Stay overnight to explore without the day-tripper crowds — evening light on the Yayoi Kusama pumpkin by the sea is exceptional. Ferry from Uno Port (Okayama) takes 20 min.
