Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Active volcanic vents at Nasu-dake hiss and steam — hikers wear gas masks above the Yunishigawa zone

  • 2

The Imperial Family's summer villa is closed but the surrounding highland is public walking territory

  • 3

Nasu Ranch has 50+ cheese and dairy shops — the Miruku Rando facility makes its own camembert

Local Tips

The highland plateau has active volcanic vents, deer, and good hiking. The Bettanuma marsh boardwalk (1.5km) is accessible year-round and often has wild deer. Combine with Nasu's famous cheese and dairy farms — the area's butter and ice cream are excellent. The autumn foliage on the highland plateau (October) is outstanding.
