Noto Peninsula Coast

A wild, barely-touristed peninsula jutting into the Japan Sea with rugged cliffs, rice terraces stepping into the sea (Shiroyone Senmaida), morning fish markets in small fishing ports, and salt farms operating for 1,200 years. The oyster-growing coast near Nanao produces Japan's finest winter oysters.

Local Tips

The Wajima Morning Market is the most famous on the Japan Sea coast — fresh seafood, lacquerware, and local vegetables sold by the same families for generations. The Senmaida (thousand rice terraces) illuminated with LED lights October–March is a remarkable installation. The Noto coastline (especially the Gojiraiwa and Ganmon rock formations on the Outer Noto coast) is wild and striking. Allow 2 days minimum.
