Numata Castle Ruins & Town

A castle town perched on a mesa above the Tone and Usui Rivers confluence — the flat-topped plateau creates dramatic views of the surrounding valleys. The town was the domain of Sanada Masayuki (the same commander of Ueda Castle) and holds the Kenmachi shopping street of Edo-period earthen-wall merchant buildings.

Local Tips

An undervisited castle town in northern Gunma with excellent hiking access to the Oze National Park wetlands (1 hour north by bus). The castle ruins park has good sakura in April. The Tone River gorge below town has white-water rafting available Apr–Oct. Good transit point for Minakami onsen and outdoor activities.
