Oarai Isosaki Shrine — Sea Torii

A coastal shrine with a torii gate standing directly in the Pacific surf — one of Japan's top 10 most photographed shrine gates. The shrine has guarded the sea since the 9th century, and the rocks around the torii gate are rich in tidal pools. The Pacific sunrise over the gate (particularly at New Year and summer solstice) is extraordinary.

Local Tips

The two sacred torii standing in the surf of the Pacific are most dramatic at sunrise when the waves crash around the base. The shrine itself sits on a headland directly above. Combine with Aqua World aquarium (10 min by bus) for a full Ibaraki coast day. The Oarai Beef (wagyu) lunch at local restaurants is worth planning around.
