Oka Castle Ruins

A 12th-century mountain fortress perched on sheer cliffs above a river gorge — the place where composer Rentaro Taki played as a child and found inspiration for "Kojo no Tsuki," one of Japan's best-loved songs. Almost no foreign tourists ever come here.

Local Tips

The castle ruins occupy a dramatic ridge above two valleys — the stone walls and approach through cedar forest are excellent. The view from the main tower base over the Ogita Valley is outstanding. The path through the outer walls and secondary citadels takes 45 minutes. Combine with Beppu Hell Tour and Yufuin for a full Oita day.
