Shimizu Port — Tuna Capital

Japan's leading port for bonito and one of the top tuna-landing ports nationally. The S-Pulse Dream Plaza mall overlooking the port has a dedicated market floor with stalls selling maguro don at prices that make Tokyo prices look absurd. Early morning catches often hit restaurant tables by lunch.

Local Tips

Shimizu Port handles 20% of Japan's fresh tuna — the morning market is one of the finest in Japan. The Kashi-no-Ichiba terrace restaurants offer exceptional tuna-based breakfast sushi sets from ¥800. Mt Fuji is visible directly across Suruga Bay on clear mornings from the port. The Shimizu S-Pulse soccer stadium and the Miho no Matsubara pine grove are nearby.
