Hotokegaura (Buddha Shore)

A sea cliff of towering white rhyolite spires rising from the sapphire water of the Tsugaru Strait, accessible only by sightseeing boat. The formations look like Buddhas and bodhisattvas carved by the sea over millennia.

Local Tips

Hotokegaura's white rhyolite rock formations eroded into Buddhist figures are most striking at sunrise or in misty conditions. The boat tour (40 min) is the main way to experience the full coastline. Very remote — combine with Osorezan (the Japanese gateway to hell) on the Shimokita Peninsula for a full otherworldly day.
