Shiretoko Peninsula

Japan's wildest UNESCO World Heritage wilderness — brown bears fish for salmon on river banks, Steller sea eagles soar over drift ice, and five volcanic lakes glow green in beech forest. Almost entirely roadless, it's Japan as it was before people.

Local Tips

Japan's most wild peninsula — a UNESCO World Heritage site where brown bears, Steller sea eagles, and drift ice define the seasons. The Shiretoko Five Lakes ground trail requires a ranger guide in high bear season (late April–July) — book in advance. The winter drift ice (January–March) viewed from an icebreaker ship from Utoro is one of Japan's great wildlife experiences.
