Local Tips

Over 1,400 Japanese macaques live on the mountain in two troop groups — the feeding encounters are completely unscripted, just a ranger calling the troop down. The monkeys completely ignore humans and go about their social business around your feet. The short monorail ascent to the monkey area is included with admission. Combine with Beppu Hell Tour (20 min by car).
