The covered arcade stays active until midnight.

Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Shirokuma at Mujioka — a mound of shaved ice with condensed milk, azuki beans, and fruit — is the Kagoshima food pilgrimage

  • 2

Black pork shabu-shabu is richer than regular pork; the collagen content keeps the broth silky

  • 3

The shochu (sweet potato spirit) tasting at local liquor stores is free and enthusiastic — Kagoshima produces 200+ varieties

Local Tips

Tenmonkan is the heart of Kagoshima nightlife — the covered shopping arcade and surrounding streets have excellent restaurants serving kurobuta pork (Kagoshima black pork), eel (unagi), and shochu. The black pork shabu-shabu and tonkatsu are the city's culinary benchmarks. The Shiroyama Observatory above the city (10 min by bus) gives the iconic Sakurajima view.
