Tsukiji Outer Market

The working wholesale market may have moved to Toyosu, but Tsukiji's outer market — 400 shops and restaurants in a covered arcade — remains the finest place in the world to eat fresh seafood at breakfast. The tamagoyaki (rolled omelette) shops alone are worth the trip, and the uni (sea urchin) and tuna sashimi are served within hours of landing.

Local Tips

The inner tuna market moved to Toyosu in 2018 but the outer market remains the best street food corridor in Tokyo. Tamagoyaki (thick egg omelette) fresh from the griddle, tuna temaki handrolls, and fresh scallops on the shell at ¥300 are the staple breakfast. Come hungry and eat as you walk — bring cash. The Namiyoke Inari Shrine at the market entrance is worth a quick visit.
