Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Turn into the covered Makishi Public Market for fresh fish and the best champuru upstairs (vendors cook what you buy below)

  • 2

Buy a Okinawan "Blue Seal" ice cream at one of the shops — ube (purple yam) flavor is locally beloved

  • 3

The narrower Heiwa Dori side street is where locals shop — less touristy, better prices

Local Tips

The side streets off Kokusai-dori (especially Ichiba Hondori and Mutsumi-bashi Street) contain Naha's best local restaurants and awamori bars — the main street is more tourist-facing. Makishi Public Market is a 5-minute walk east. The Tsuboya pottery district is a 10-minute walk southeast. Evening is the liveliest time.
