Nokogiriyama Ropeway

A 4-minute gondola ascent over the Uraga Channel to the summit of Mt Nokogiri with views stretching from Tokyo Bay to the Izu Peninsula, the Miura Peninsula, and on clear days, Mt Fuji directly west. The western slope is covered in former quarry walls of cut stone — a dramatic industrial landscape now being reclaimed by moss and fern.

Duration

2–3 hours

Admission

¥1,200 round-trip (ropeway)

Hours

Ropeway: 9:00–17:00 (9:00–16:00 Nov 16–Feb 15); Nihonji Temple: 9:00–16:00 (last entry 15:00)

Best Season

Year-round (winter for clearest Fuji views)

Access

Hamakanaya Station on JR Uchibo Line; or ferry from Kurihama Port, Yokosuka (approx. 40 min)

Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Summit panorama: Tokyo Bay, Izu Peninsula, Miura coast, and Mt Fuji all visible simultaneously

  • 2

The quarry walls of hand-cut stone blocks create an accidental sculpture garden of industrial heritage

  • 3

Combined with Nihon-ji Temple (at the summit) for the complete Nokogiri-yama experience

Local Tips

The ropeway is also the approach to the Mt Nokogiri ('Sawblade Mountain') stone Buddha complex. The cliff-edge 'Jigoku-nozoki' (Hell Peek) viewpoint involves leaning over a sheer drop — genuinely vertiginous. Reach by Tokyo Bay Ferry from Kurihama (35 min) or JR Uchibo Line. Combining the ferry and ropeway makes this an outstanding half-day from Tokyo.
