Toyama Bay — Japan's Natural Fish Tank

Toyama Bay drops from 0 to 1,000 metres within a few kilometres — a unique underwater topography creating such rich upwelling currents that UNESCO called it "Japan's natural fish tank." The bay produces shiro-ebi (white shrimp, found nowhere else), buri (yellowtail tuna), and hotaruika. The seafood-focused morning markets at Shinminato Uoichiba are extraordinary.

Local Tips

Toyama Bay is one of Japan's most productive fishing grounds — the deep water (700m) is uniquely close to shore, making the Bay a 'natural fish tank' with extraordinary seafood diversity. Hotaruika firefly squid (season: March–May), buri yellowtail (winter), and shiro ebi (white shrimp, year-round) are the specialties. The Toyama morning markets near the port are the best place to eat them.
