Takayama Old Town

Japan's best-preserved Edo-period merchant district — three rows of dark-timbered sake breweries, craft shops, and teahouses stretching along canals in the Japan Alps. Location

Why Visit

  • 1

Sanmachi Suji — three streets of original 17th-century merchant buildings, none reconstructed

  • 2

The morning market (asaichi) under the cherry trees has run every day for hundreds of years

  • 3

Hida Beef — marbled wagyu from mountain-raised cattle, served as ¥500 skewers on every corner

Local Tips

The Sanmachi Suji historic district (three sake-brewer streets) is most beautiful in early morning before the tourist crowds and shops open. The morning markets (Jinya-mae and Miyagawa) are genuine local markets, not tourist traps. Hida Folk Village open-air museum (20 min walk) has outstanding thatched farmhouses. Book accommodation in advance — Takayama's popularity means beds sell out months ahead for the October festival.
