Takeda Castle Ruins

A 15th-century mountain castle whose stone foundations sit at 353 metres elevation, surrounded on autumn mornings by a sea of clouds that earns it the nickname "Japan's Machu Picchu." The ruins themselves are haunting without the clouds, with panoramic views of the Maruyama River valley. Predawn hikes are rewarded with the most dramatic mist.

Local Tips

The 'Japanese Machu Picchu' — the castle ruins float above a sea of cloud on autumn mornings (September–November). The best cloud sea viewing is from Ritsuzan Park viewpoint across the valley, not from inside the ruins. Arrive at the ruins before 10am to avoid crowds. The 40-minute uphill walk from Takeda Station is part of the experience. Weekday October visits are far better than weekends.
