Tochigi City — Edo Canal Town

A perfectly preserved Edo-period canal town nicknamed "Little Kyoto of the Kanto Region" — kura-zukuri storehouses, daidai-colored walls, and 400-year-old willow trees line the Uzuma River, still navigable by traditional flat-bottom boats. The town centre has more preserved Edo buildings per block than almost anywhere in Japan.

Why Visit

  • 1

Traditional flat-bottom boats poled along the Uzuma River canal — identical to Edo-period transport

  • 2

Over 20 kura-zukuri buildings in two blocks — the highest concentration outside Kawagoe

  • 3

The annual Doll Festival (Hina Matsuri, February–March) fills the storehouses with thousands of dolls

Local Tips

Tochigi city preserves the finest Edo-period canal town architecture in the Kanto region — more intact and authentic than Kawagoe or Sawara. The canal-side kurazashiki warehouse district is the main draw. The boat ride through the canal gives the best perspective of the architecture from the water. Very few foreign visitors — a genuine discovery.
