Nara Travel Guide
Before Kyoto, there was Nara — Japan's first permanent capital. Todaiji houses the world's largest wooden structure and a 15-metre bronze Buddha; over 1,000 tame deer roam Nara Park as living national treasures. Yoshino's mountain cherry blossoms — celebrated for over 1,300 years — are among Japan's most sublime seasonal spectacles.
2 hidden gems in Nara include insider locations, local tips, and full access details.

Asuka Village
Japan's ancient capital before Nara — the seat of power in the 6th and 7th centuries, dotted with mysterious stone sculptures, burial mounds, and the oldest Buddhist carvings in Japan. Best explored by rental bicycle through rice fields connecting colossal granite figures, imperial tombs, and the Asuka-dera temple (Japan's oldest).

Horyuji Temple
The world's oldest surviving wooden structures — the main hall (kondo) and five-storey pagoda were built in 607 CE and have stood for 1,400 years. A UNESCO World Heritage site and the temple founded by Prince Shotoku himself. The attached Yumedono (Hall of Dreams) houses Japan's most perfectly preserved 7th-century gilt bronze statue.

Isuien Garden
Nara's finest stroll garden — a succession of ponds, bridges, and viewpoints that incorporate Mt Mikasa and the Great Buddha Hall roof into the composition as "borrowed scenery." Built in the 17th and 19th centuries, it remains one of Japan's most sophisticated examples of the shakkei technique.

Kasuga Taisha
Nara's most important shrine, founded in 768 CE by the Fujiwara clan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns line the approach — lit twice a year in massive candlelit festivals. The primeval Kasugayama Forest behind the shrine has been sacred land for 1,300 years, never logged.

Kasugayama Primeval Forest
One of Japan's oldest protected forests, left completely undisturbed since Kasuga Grand Shrine was founded in 768 AD. The result is a primeval broadleaf temperate forest where trees up to 700 years old tower over the walking paths — a rare living example of what pre-human Japan looked like. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Muro-ji Temple
A remote Shingon temple deep in the Muro mountains of eastern Nara, famous for its five-story pagoda — Japan's smallest, yet perhaps its most perfectly proportioned, standing amid ancient cryptomeria trees. The temple welcomed female worshippers when all other Koya-san affiliated temples were closed to women.

Naramachi Merchant Quarter
The preserved Edo-period merchant district of Nara, where narrow lanes wind between machiya townhouses and small workshops. Unlike the deer-park crowds, Naramachi moves at an unhurried pace with traditional craft shops, sake breweries, and hidden garden cafes occupying centuries-old buildings. The best after-hours Nara experience.

Nishiyoshino Mimosa Valley
Japan's most stunning mimosa blossom landscape — thousands of mimosa trees covering entire hillsides in bright yellow in late February, weeks before sakura. The river valley in Nishiyoshino turns completely gold, and the contrast with the snow-dusted mountains behind makes for extraordinary photographs largely unknown to foreign visitors.

Yoshino Cherry Blossom Mountain
Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom site — 30,000 trees covering four distinct zones of Mt Yoshino that bloom sequentially from late March to late April. The tradition of planting here began 1,300 years ago as sacred offerings to Zao Gongen. The mountain is also a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage site on the Omine mountain path.

Yoshino Mountain
A sacred mountain village 90 minutes from Osaka/Kyoto that hosts Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom display — 30,000 trees covering four altitudinal zones that bloom in sequence over several weeks. Yoshino has been a place of imperial exile, Buddhist pilgrimage, and poetic inspiration for over 1,300 years.
